NEUROQUEERING PLAY THERAPY:
BUILDING AN INCLUSIVE PLAY THERAPY PRACTICE
This workshop will go back to the basics by reviewing the Eight Principles of Play Therapy by Virginia Axline and critically examine and update them, in the context of Neuroqueer Theory by Nick Walker, in order to create a play therapy practice that is inclusive to all. Play therapy practice can often hold as standard ways of playing that exclude and pathologize natural ways of existing in the world. For example, Autistic and other neurodivergent brain types are frequently misunderstood, and this misunderstanding can lead to expectations within the therapy space that make it difficult for a neurodivergent young person to use the space to heal and learn to thrive. Rewriting the Eight Principles will allow participants to examine their own internalized biases that get in the way of providing true neurodiversity affirming therapy to young people.
In addition to reviewing the website linked above, it will be helpful for attendees to read this essay in particular: https://neuroqueer.com/neuroqueer-an-introduction/
Following the workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the history and basic theory of non-directive play therapy.
2. Show an understanding of neurodiversity affirming play therapy.
3. Demonstrate the application of updated and inclusive play therapy principles in their own play therapy practice.

Please consider an amount that will work for you financially and that also represents an investment in the learning. "I absolutely loved this workshop! As a late-diagnosed Autistic adult, I found that the information presented (and the format in which it was presented) not only fit my needs as a learner but also helped me to better connect with my clients and their families. The information was relevant and up-to-date, and provided a deeper understanding of this topic. Thank you for sharing all this information!"

"After taking this training with Jennifer, I was able to give myself permission to support my clients *the way they needed*. I learned how to better navigate competing needs and prioritize challenging ableist mechanisms in my own work. I highly recommend this training to all mental health professionals!"
"This workshop was FANTASTIC. Jennifer is not only a presenter who can share valuable insights from lived experience, she is also really well educated in the field and a very engaging presenter. She makes her materials readily available and is well-organized about making sure additional resources mentioned in sessions do get sent in the follow-ups. I highly recommend this workshop to anyone who is, know, loves, works with, teaches, bumps into in the community,... an autistic person. The more we all know, the better we can make things for all of us. Thank you!"
"The workshop, consultation, and resources have been very helpful for myself and my clients. "
"This was a wonderful training, I highly recommend to anyone who wants to learn more about working with autistic clients and their families!"
"Jennifer's love of teaching therapists how to work with people through a neuro-affirming lens and from a non-ableist perspective comes through so beautifully in this workshop! I'm grateful that my team and I had the opportunity to attend this workshop together and be in dialogue with one another AND have the support of Jennifer to help us sort through our questions and offer clarity. I highly recommend Jennifer's WWAYP workshop for anyone who wants to learn about working with autistic people."
